How does German state power work?

Germany is a federal republic, meaning power is shared between the national government and 16 individual states, called 'Länder'. Each state has its own parliament and government, responsible for many local issues. Winning a state election, like the AfD hopes to do in Saxony-Anhalt, gives a party significant regional influence and a platform for national politics.
