El Niño warms the Pacific, altering global atmospheric circulation. This can weaken the polar vortex, a band of strong winds high above the Arctic. A weaker vortex allows cold air, usually trapped at the poles, to 'spill' southwards into regions like Europe, bringing colder, snowier conditions to the UK, as the Met Office warns.
