How do telescopes see elements?

Telescopes like the one in Chile use a technique called spectroscopy. When light from the moon plume passes through a prism or grating, it splits into a spectrum of colours. Each chemical element, like sodium or lithium, leaves a unique 'fingerprint' of dark or bright lines in this spectrum, revealing its presence.
