How do police investigate abroad?

When a British citizen is involved in a serious crime overseas, local police forces, in this case, the Portuguese authorities, lead the investigation. British police might offer assistance, but they don't have jurisdiction. The FCDO helps ensure proper procedures are followed and that the victim's family is kept informed, respecting local laws.
