Explained in plain English

How do penalty shootouts work?

When a football match is still tied after extra time, a penalty shootout decides the winner. Each team takes turns shooting from the penalty spot against the opposing goalkeeper. The team that scores more penalties out of an initial five, or continues to score more in 'sudden death' if it's still level, wins the match.
