How do dogs sniff out cancer?

Dogs possess an incredible sense of smell, far superior to humans. They can detect tiny amounts of volatile organic compounds, which are chemicals released by cells. Cancerous cells often produce different volatile organic compounds than healthy cells, creating a unique 'scent' that trained dogs, like those in the Dognosis trial, can learn to identify in breath samples.
