Wikipedia avoids strict UK online safety rules for now

Wikipedia will not currently be classed as a Category 1 service under the UK's Online Safety Act, meaning it avoids strict new rules. Ofcom, the communications regulator, told the Wikimedia Foundation on 10 July 2026 that it made the decision based on a new interpretation of the law. However, Wikipedia remains on a "watch list" and could still be recategorised in the future, which the Foundation says is an "existential threat."
