Why Google just opened up its Android app store

Google and Epic Games have dropped their attempt to settle a lawsuit, meaning Google must now allow other app stores inside its own. A judge originally ruled in October 2024 that this would fix Google's illegal monopoly over Android apps. Google is already telling US app developers their listings will be shared with third-party stores from July 22nd, unless they opt out.
