VAT scrapped on electricity bills from October, saving homes about £45 a year
It's the first big policy move by Andy Burnham, the new prime minister, who took office on Monday promising help with the cost of living. The 5% rate comes off from 1 October, and suppliers have been told to pass the saving on to everyone, including customers on fixed deals. It's being funded by scrapping the digital ID scheme, which was due to cost £1.8bn over three years.
