US offers Ukraine security guarantees in peace talks
AI Generated (Gemini)
The United States has offered Ukraine Article 5-style security guarantees as an alternative to NATO membership during Berlin peace talks. Ukrainian President Zelensky agreed to drop NATO aspirations in exchange for legally binding Western security commitments similar to NATO's collective defense clause. Trump's envoys and Ukrainian officials made progress on approximately 90% of issues, with territorial concessions remaining the primary obstacle. The proposed guarantees would include military assistance, intelligence sharing, and deterrence mechanisms, but would not involve US troops on the ground or automatic collective defense.
