UN chief warns of nuclear risk as US-Russia pact ends
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has sounded the alarm after the New START agreement between the United States and Russia came to an end. He warned that the lapse marks a deeply concerning turning point for international security, as there are now no legally enforced restrictions on the world’s largest nuclear weapons programmes for the first time in many years. Although Moscow has claimed it continues to act responsibly, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has argued that any new arms control framework must also address China’s expanding nuclear capabilities.
