UK's biggest train company now publicly owned

The UK's biggest train operator, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), is now officially run by the public, affecting millions of passengers daily. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called this a 'defining moment' for the railway, with GTR going public on Sunday, May 31, 2026. The Department for Transport promises to double Gatwick Express services and add 110 new travel safe officers.
