UK to let universities and groups sponsor refugees

The UK will open new sponsorship routes allowing community groups, universities and employers to bring in eligible refugees, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced. Modelled on a Canadian scheme, sponsors would take responsibility for housing and helping refugees into work, with the first arrivals expected by autumn 2027 after biometric, criminal and health checks. Numbers will be capped and start low, and the plan sits alongside tighter asylum rules that critics and supporters have both questioned.
