UK starts review of BBC funding and future
The UK government has launched a comprehensive Charter Review for the BBC with a 12-week public consultation running until March 2025, examining governance, funding models and accountability amid declining licence fee revenues and changing viewing habits. The review considers alternatives to the current licence fee system including commercial revenue expansion, subscription models and general taxation, while addressing the broadcaster's role in combating global disinformation and maintaining its World Service operations which face potential budget cuts of tens of millions of pounds.
