UK Inflation Rises in December, Driven by One-Off Factors
UK inflation rose to 3.4% in December, according to official figures, marking the first increase in five months. The rise was primarily driven by higher airfares due to the Christmas and New Year period, and increased tobacco prices following duty rises announced in the Budget on November 26th. Rising food costs, particularly for bread and cereals, also contributed. Analysts believe this increase is temporary and does not signal a longer upward trend. The Bank of England is scheduled to meet on February 5th to discuss interest rates.
