UK calls for smaller UN tribunals body

The UK wants the UN's criminal tribunals body, the Mechanism, to become substantially smaller and more focused. Legal Adviser Colin McIntyre spoke on 12 June 2026, during a Security Council review. He proposed narrowing judicial functions, cutting judge numbers, and moving national authority assistance to the UN Secretariat. The UK also wants to remove its two-branch structure, saying it's no longer necessary or cost-effective.
