Taiwan raises defence spending to deter China, says President Lai

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te announced on Saturday that the country is increasing its defence spending to deter war with China. By 2027, his administration will have devoted an unprecedented NT$1.1 trillion ($34.5 billion) to defence, a sum exceeding 3% of its GDP. Lai additionally emphasised that the Taiwanese population's right to exist warrants Beijing's respect.
