Spraying chemicals could protect Earth from solar storms

We could protect our satellites, GPS, and power from solar storms by boosting Earth's magnetic shield, say scientists. A team led by Brian Walsh proposes launching six satellites to spray chemicals like barium or lithium into space. Computer simulations show this "StormWall" system could halve the intensity of a big geomagnetic storm.
