Space shuttle Atlantis docked with Mir on Sept. 19, 1996 for crew swap

NASA's space shuttle Atlantis arrived at Russia's Mir space station on September 19, 1996, bringing supplies and collecting astronaut Shannon Lucid. Lucid's 188-day stay on Mir set a new record, making it the lengthiest space journey undertaken by a US woman up to that point. Another NASA astronaut, John Blaha, was dropped off to spend the next four months on the station.
