Scientist wins $100,000 for decoding birdsong

A scientist has won a $100,000 prize for decoding the calls of zebra finches, bringing human-animal communication closer. Dr Julie Elie identified 11 core calls and their meanings, revealing how the birds announce who they are and what they are doing. Her work used machine learning and tests where birds agreed with her classifications, showing they understand their vocalisations.
