Sainsbury's and Morrisons Quietly Flirted With a Mega-Merger

Sainsbury's and Morrisons Quietly Flirted With a Mega-Merger

Sainsbury's held preliminary talks about merging with private equity-owned rival Morrisons between November 2025 and February this year before walking away, City AM reports. No talks are active, but neither side has ruled out restarting them. Combined, the grocers would hold about 23.6 per cent of the UK market, behind Tesco's 27.8 per cent, and would face close competition scrutiny. Both firms declined to comment.
