Rural motorists face steepest bills under planned electric car tax
New analysis indicates motorists living outside major cities could face markedly higher costs than those in the capital under Labour’s planned road-pricing scheme for electric vehicles. The proposal would introduce a 3p-per-mile levy from 2028. Estimates suggest drivers in the south-west may pay almost four times as much each year as London residents. Opponents argue the imbalance risks slowing wider uptake of electric cars, while ministers insist the policy is a fair way to replace falling fuel duty income.
