Research Reveals British Swallowtail's Ancient Genetic Separation
Protecting this rare butterfly could become more important after researchers found it has been separate from related European populations far longer than believed. A genetic study published on Sunday concluded the British form split between 200,000 and 1.7 million years ago. It now breeds only in the Norfolk Broads, and researchers opposed bringing in the continental form because mixing could erase its unique identity.
