Policing minister Sarah Jones said the "frustration we see in our communities today" is a result of chaos from the years before the 2024 general election. Her comments followed anti-migrant protests in Dover and Portsmouth over the weekend, where masked demonstrators blocked roads and damaged vehicles. Hampshire Police Federation chairman Spencer Wragg described the Portsmouth scenes as "criminal behaviour of assaults, damage and intimidation."
