Oxford professor says Parthenon optical illusions are 2,000-year myth.
The University of Oxford's Professor Alain Goriely determined that the Greek temple's subtle curves, intended to rectify optical illusions, are either meaningless or almost imperceptible. He posits that the legend originates with the Roman architect Vitruvius, who documented the Parthenon's construction four centuries later. Goriely thinks the architects had other reasons for the design, like preventing puddles or simply for visual appeal.
