OpenAI banned Canadian teenager before fatal school attack

The artificial intelligence firm permanently deleted Jesse Van Rootselaar's profile in June 2025 after detecting plans to commit violence. Management considered contacting Canadian national police but concluded the digital threat lacked immediate credibility. Last week, the young suspect killed eight individuals at a British Columbia school before ending her own life. Company workers eventually shared the user data with local investigators following the tragic event.
