Ofgem proposes refundable power deposits for data centres

Ofgem proposed on 29 July that data centre developers pay refundable deposits of up to £712,500 per megawatt to secure grid connections. The regulator said grid connection applications rose from 41 to 125 gigawatts between November 2024 and June 2025, driven largely by data centres. Developers get the deposit back once operational but forfeit it if they quit, with consultation closing 16 September.
