O2 becomes first UK network to use Starlink satellites
O2 has unveiled a satellite-powered backup service enabling users to switch to Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, when 4G coverage drops out. Designed to address persistent rural signal gaps, the scheme could extend connectivity across an area comparable to two-thirds of Wales. Availability is presently limited to certain Samsung Galaxy S25 smartphone models, and an additional monthly subscription fee is necessary. Ministers have welcomed the development, describing it as a boost for the UK’s digital network resilience.
