New York's governor, Kathy Hochul, has ordered a one-year pause on permits for massive data centres, which power AI services. The pause will allow the state to create an environmental impact assessment and finish rules for how these centres provide their own power. The order comes as communities worry about the environmental and financial effects of these large facilities.
