NHS treats first leukaemia patient with breakthrough living drug
Oscar Murphy became the first patient to receive CAR-T therapy for leukaemia on the NHS at Manchester Royal Infirmary in January 2025. The 28-year-old described the treatment as very sci-fi and fantastic. The living drug uses genetically modified immune cells to target cancer. The therapy became available after NHS England agreed to fund it at several centres across the country. Around 50 patients annually are expected to benefit from the breakthrough treatment which offers potential cure for aggressive leukaemia.
