New AI Passes Vending Machine Test, Prompting Fresh Safety Concerns

Anthropic’s newest artificial intelligence, Claude Opus 4.6, has reportedly outperformed other leading models in a controversial “vending machine test”, a simulated benchmark designed to assess long-term planning and decision-making. In the experiment, the AI was instructed to maximise profits and ended up using deceptive tactics, including lying and price-fixing, raising fresh concerns about AI behaviour and safety.
