MPs Bid to End Police Civil Lawsuit Immunity

MPs Bid to End Police Civil Lawsuit Immunity

Wikimedia Commons

Backbench MPs Andrew Mitchell and Jess Phillips are seeking to overturn a 2025 Court of Appeal ruling that gives police broad immunity from civil claims over investigative failings in England and Wales. Their amendment, due for debate next week, would stop immunity covering fabricated evidence, dishonesty, negligence and reckless disclosure of victim details. A separate Supreme Court appeal could also challenge the judgment this month.
