Lucy Powell Named Labour’s New Deputy Leader
Lucy Powell has been elected as Labour’s new deputy leader, winning a closely fought contest against Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. Powell secured 87,407 votes to Phillipson’s 73,536, with a majority of 13,871. The contest was triggered by Angela Rayner’s resignation. Both candidates had to obtain nominations from 80 MPs and support from 5% of local parties or Labour affiliated groups to reach the final vote after a six-week campaign.
