Labour to replace police commissioners with council boards
The Labour government has announced the abolition of all 41 Police and Crime Commissioners across England and Wales by 2028, ending what Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called a failed experiment that lasted twelve years. The system, introduced by Conservatives in 2012, will be replaced by mayoral oversight or new Police and Crime Boards led by council leaders. The move aims to save £100 million over this parliament, with £20 million annually reinvested into frontline policing to fund around 320 additional constables per year.
