Labour NEC approves Burnham byelection bid

Labour's National Executive Committee has approved Andy Burnham to stand in the candidate selection process for the upcoming Makerfield by-election, the party confirmed on Friday. The decision reverses the NEC's 8-1 vote in January that had blocked Burnham from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, is widely expected to challenge Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership if he wins the seat.
