Joan of Arc was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431 after being convicted of heresy, about two years after helping French forces achieve key victories during the Hundred Years’ War. Nearly six centuries later, she remains one of France’s most recognised historical figures. Canonised as a saint in 1920, Joan’s life and death continue to be commemorated across Europe on the anniversary of her execution.
