Hong Kong court convicts Jimmy Lai of sedition

Jimmy Lai, a 78-year-old UK national, was convicted in Hong Kong on Monday. The charges, brought under national security legislation, relate to collusion with foreign entities and sedition. Lai, the founder of Apple Daily, now faces a potential life sentence. Prosecutors alleged he used his newspaper to advocate for international sanctions against Hong Kong and China during 2019 protests. Lai, a known Beijing critic, has been in solitary confinement for almost five years. The trial has drawn criticism from rights organisations.
