HMRC overcharged 8.7m pensioners £5 each
Millions of pensioners have been paying too much income tax, with the error potentially adding up to £43.5 million in total. HMRC, the tax authority, admitted a calculation error meant up to 8.7 million retirees were overcharged on their state pension. The mistake, first raised last August, typically added around £5 to each pensioner's tax bill.
