Google earthquake alerts warned 11.4M in Venezuela

Google's alert system reached millions of people in Venezuela seconds before two major earthquakes, giving them crucial time to react. The country has no official early-warning system, so Google turned Android phones into a vast sensor network using their accelerometers. Almost 1.4 million of the most severe “Take Action” alerts were sent, urging people to drop and cover.
