Germany's labour minister and Social Democrat co-leader Bärbel Bas resigned both roles on Monday after her stepdaughter's death and what she called intensifying political attacks, including from Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU coalition partners. Vice-chancellor Lars Klingbeil called the sniping indecent and cancelled a planned India trip. The exit deepens strains in Merz's fragile ruling coalition over pensions and welfare as far-right AfD leads national polls.
