Former top civil servant gets record £860,000 payout
Sir Chris Wormald, the country's most senior mandarin, received the "golden goodbye" after just 14 months in the job. Sir Keir Starmer, the then-prime minister, sacked him in February as he tried to regain control of his government. The Cabinet Office's permanent secretary, Cat Little, had to get ministerial direction for the payment, which was higher than Wormald's contractual entitlement.
