EU to make phone batteries user-replaceable by 2027
Anyone tired of binning a pricey phone just because the battery died will want to hear this. From 18 February 2027, smartphones sold in the EU must have batteries users can swap at home with basic tools under a 2023 regulation now close to taking effect. Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi will have to rethink glued designs, though phones meeting certain durability and waterproofing standards may be exempt.
