EU launches climate insurance scheme after extreme summer weather

The European Union plans to establish a "climate insurance alliance" to enhance coverage for severe weather occurrences. On Wednesday, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, commented that national budgets frequently end up acting as the "insurer of last resort." Only a quarter of climate-related economic losses in the bloc are currently insured, and the new scheme aims to close this gap.
