Earliest Polar Vortex Weakening on Record May Shape UK Winter

Scientists say the polar vortex high above the Arctic has weakened earlier than in any modern record, with a possible major sudden stratospheric warming by mid-November. Met Office experts call the timing unprecedented over about 75 years of observations. Such events can later bring colder, drier spells to the UK, but snow is not guaranteed this early. Drought-hit reservoirs remain a bigger near-term UK worry.
