An animal virus called Shamonda has been confirmed on two dairy farms in Shropshire and Powys, the first cases ever recorded in Great Britain. The disease, thought to be carried mainly by biting midges, can cause fever, diarrhoea and lower milk yields in cattle. Officials said its arrival was not unexpected and that no extra control measures are currently needed, as it is not notifiable.
