British tomato growers say they could be bankrupt by autumn
The British Tomato Growers' Association warned that many UK fresh produce businesses face bankruptcy later this year if energy costs stay elevated. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and aubergines all need heated greenhouses, making them among the most expensive crops to grow in Britain. BTGA chair Simon Conway said growers 'historically only make money in the last few weeks of the season' because margins are so thin that even a small cost spike can destroy an entire year's profit.
