British Steel now nationalised after government secures UK steelmaking
The government has taken British Steel into public ownership to protect jobs and a vital national capability. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated that it will ensure the continuation of steel production in the UK and bolster the economy. The Chinese firm Jingye Group, which bought British Steel in 2020, will seek compensation after saying it was losing £700,000 daily.
