Britain grows just 62% of its own food. During a shipping crisis, that number matters
The UK produces just 62% of the food it consumes, leaving it dangerously exposed to the kind of disruption the Iran war is causing. The country imports 60% of its nitrogen fertiliser and relies on international shipping routes for significant quantities of fresh produce, meat and dairy. Industry experts say the food supply chain has been 'repeatedly called into question' in recent crises and warn that this conflict may 'expose its flaws further.'
