Wikimedia Commons

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon fell 41.8% in the year to July 2026, the biggest drop since records began in 1988, according to Brazilian government satellite data. Clearance in the Cerrado savanna region fell by 23.8%. The figures come ahead of the 25 October run-off between President Lula, who has pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2030, and Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
