Barclays: May spending up, fueled by leisure and 12% petrol hike

Higher fuel costs and stronger leisure purchases meant households spent more after a fall the month before. Barclays reported card spending increased by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in May, following a 0.1 per cent decline in April, while non-essential purchases rose and entertainment outlays recovered. Fuel expenditure climbed nearly 12 per cent, and unleaded petrol averaged 158.52p a litre during the month.
